Introduction to Textile Designcurrrently taught under Design Studies 501
This course is an introduction to technical and conceptual ways of working in Textile Design. Students will participate in three five week modules: one module intorducing print and dye concerns, one module in off-loom proceses and one module considering structural enrichment techniques. Each module will include a series of introductory exercises leading to a larger project. The work will be supported by short reading and slide lecturess highlighting historical and contemporary work.
Work in the Structural Enrichment module with Mary Hark will explore the nature of fabric and consider the expressive possibilities of traditional and experimental embellishment techniques.
Beyond the physical work of manipulating fabric and attempting to master techniques, students will be encouraged to consider how these materials might carry ideas; to pay attention to what questions the work suggests, to what they love, what captures their imagination: what processes, fabrics, textures, etc. suggest continued investigation.
The goal of this module is to introduce ways of working and thinking, and to support the development of personal aesthetic values.
